About this lesson Design/Bid/Build is considered the traditional project delivery method in which the organization first contracts with design professionals to plan and design the project. In a linear work sequence, the design team collaborates with the organization to refine project intentions and produce a full set of construction drawings and specifications. A request for bids is then issued for contractors/builders to bid on the project. With design/bid/build, the contract is most often awarded to the lowest bidder, though other value-based criteria may have been included.

To ensure the project management process runs smoothly, project managers need to possess a varied set of skills and expertise. Successful PMs demonstrate a high level of organization and attention to detail, understanding big-picture business goals, risk-management ability, resourcefulness, excellent communication skills, and great leadership. According to the Project Management Institute, an openness to self-assessment and re-evaluation are also helpful. Putting the initiation phase into action Upon project completion and timely delivery to clients, the project manager’s role is to highlight strengths, list the takeaways of the project, identify the ambiguities, and suggest how they could be rectified for future projects.
